Hua Mingsheng: From Flower Farmer to Senior Farmer Technician


Huamingsheng is the first florist in Dounan Village. In the 1980s, as an ordinary farmer, he planted the first sword orchid in his field.


Huamingsheng said, "At that time, there were four retailers in the whole city of Kunming. Every family took several buckets and placed flowers in them. We spent 90 yuan on planting balls. Four months after harvesting, they sold 160 yuan.


Huamingsheng, who tastes sweet, rents land nearby and grows more and more flowers. Later, he visited experts at the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and introduced new varieties of flowers, such as carnations and roses, to become a professional flower grower. Hua Mingsheng, who spent half his life dealing with flowers, has become a senior farmer technician.


Hua Mingsheng said, "It can be said that I am the experience and beneficiary of reform and opening up. We are going to build a flower tourism town here. As Dounan people, we are proud to be the owners of the town.


Dounan Village: From "Road Market" to Flower Street


And Hua Mingsheng also keeps pace with the times and changes in Dounan Village. From the initial "street market" to the later flower street, to the first Dounan flower market built in the 1990s, now the Dounan flower market has become the largest cut flower market in Asia. In 2017, the trading volume of fresh cut flowers in Dounan Flower Exchange Market reached 7.634 billion branches, with a turnover of 6.382 billion yuan. It has been exported to more than 50 countries and regions. For more than 20 consecutive years, the trading volume, trading volume and export volume ranked first in China.


In the auction hall of Kunming International Flower Auction and Exchange Center, more than 600 purchasers from all over the country sit here at 3 p.m. every day to bid for fresh cut flowers. The average daily turnover here is about 3.5 million yuan.


Traffic upgrading is indispensable to the warming of foreign trade


Dounan Flowers is a microcosm of Kunming's transformation of the mode of economic development. In early years, Kunming has been a pillar industry of tobacco, metallurgy and chemical industry. Its structure is not good and its industry is not strong.


How to break through the old pattern? In 2016, Kunming has set a strategic goal of building a regional international central city based on the southwest, facing the whole country and radiating Southeast Asia.


Traffic upgrading is indispensable to the warming up of foreign trade. At Yunnan Airport Logistics International Terminal, workers are busy loading boxes of flowers and electronic products onto planes to Japan.


Fan Yi, the freight manager of Yunnan Airport Logistics Company, pointed to a large number of goods and told reporters, "These express, textile and electronic products are not local goods, but are transferred from South China. Through this hub and the adjustment of the supply structure, we expect the international throughput of this year to be 55,000 tons, which may reach 158 tons per day, and the growth of the whole year is expected to be 130%.


Today, Kunming Changshui International Airport has opened to 35 cities in South Asia and Southeast Asia, with an average of more than 50 international flights flying from here to the world every day. Kunming has built and is under construction five international railways and three international roads, which can reach Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and other countries. From economy, trade, finance, science and technology to culture, Kunming today has explored the development idea of "accelerating the march to a regional international center city", so that Kunming, which has been standing on the forefront of deepening reform, once again.


Mei Junhui, deputy director of Kunming Development and Reform Commission, said that Kunming had undertaken pilot projects at the national level such as comprehensive reform of central cities, demonstration zones of national large health industries, National Botanical museums, reform of collective property rights in rural areas, and "Shuangchuang" demonstration bases, which effectively played a pilot role in promoting the overall reform.
